First off, thank you to all those who have expressed concern over Scout’s ongoing ear troubles. It’s so sweet to know that people care about her like we do. Now, for an update.
Scout has been hanging in there. To be honest, she hasn’t let any of this slow her down too terribly much. I wouldn’t say she’s her 24/7 chipper self, but I would say it’s effected her sleep more than anything else. And thus, my sleep. We cleaned her ears out on Sunday and her right one was spotless, while her left one, our problem-child ear, was kind of yucky. Not nearly as yucky as it has been, but not clean either. She was not pleased to go through this process, which takes both B and me, one of us holding her while the other does the cleaning; otherwise once we squirt that smelly cleaning fluid into her ear she’d take off like a bat out of Hades. Instead she looks up at us with those big brown droopy eyes that say, “Seriously? You didn’t want to just hug?”
We also began the process of switching out her food to the brand that we mentioned before: Wellness Whitefish and Sweet Potato. We’re doing it very gradually for two reasons: a) so that Scout won’t get sick, which abrupt changes in diet can cause, and b) because we had some old food to finish off, and can use it to gradually ween her onto the new food. The timing worked out well in that regard.
As Donna mentioned in a comment (thanks, Donna!), we haven’t yet started the yogurt. Again, we’re trying to ween her slowly, and one new food at a time is enough. We can start the yogurt after we see how Scout does on the Whitefish food.
This process will take a while; I’m estimating around two weeks once we get the Maximus completely onto the new food, but maybe her ear will react faster? It’s hard to say. In the meantime, we’re trying to avoid her eyes every time we near the cabinet where we keep the treats (“Really? You’re not getting the blueberry bites down?”) and just give her occasional treats of ice cubes, which she adore and immediately chomps into little bits. I think we’ve proven that she’s not allergic to water ;)
Exciting news! PennyPup of Dobermann Daze also awarded And Puppy Makes Four with the Liebster Award! How cool is that? You can see who we nominated here. Thanks again, PennyPup! You’ve made Zoey’s New Year’s dreams come true ;)
